5 Day Orange River Rafting – Desert Rafting - Richtersveld
Xama Adventures, an adventure travel specialist offers a 5 day river rafting trail on the mighty Orange River, near Vioolsdrift in the Richtersveld . This trail offers a fantastic opportunity to escape city life for an adventure and really is a must do! Our private camp is wonderfully green and lush and overlooks the Orange River, whilst the ablution blocks are spotless and have piping hot water. Pizza restaurant, fully licensed bar and accommodation upgrade available on request. This is where we meet for our river trips before embarking down river.
We don’t allow any glass bottles on the water so decant into plastic containers or bring cans. We recommend that you arrive with your drinks cold as we operate in remote areas, and bring at least 2 x 1L bottles of drinking water per day per person as the river water is not good to drink.
Upon arrival (by way of own transport), you are greeted by the river crew and shown around the camp, after which you get the chance to relax and enjoy scenery while indemnities are signed. A short debriefing and settle down spend the evening relaxing around the camp fire, listen to the stories of previous river excursions, gaze in wonder at the stars and enjoy mouth watering bush cuisine.
After a cup of coffee, shower & healthy breakfast we start preparing our equipment for the river trip. Here you will be allocated with a dry bag (approximately 30 litres per person) or a watertight barrel (approximately 25 litres per person) for your clothes and cooler box (capacity of 52 cans) per two people. You will also receive your life jackets, paddles and boats. After your safety speech & demonstration we head down to the river. Please take note that there is no designated campsite while on river but your guides will ensure a safe spot for the night’s rest. Let the water fights begin!
Wake up to the sounds of nature and enjoy a fresh breakfast, while the sun comes up. Get into our rafting gear and continue further down the river. Experience Grade 2 rapids, large pools, great for fishing, swimming and water fights. As we wander further down the river we head into the mountains and explore the mighty river as it carves its way through this pristine mountain desert. The night is spent again on the banks of the river, under the beautiful star lit sky.
Another morning is enjoyed on the banks of the river while your guide crew prepares a mouth watering breakfast. Today we tackle the largest rapid on the trail “Mighty Shambok”. We will spend some time at the rapid and enjoys the spills of laughter as we maneuver our way through the wave trains. We continue down the river passing “Rudies Mine”, “Witches Hat and “scathes” before enjoying the rapids know as “Terraces”.
Tonight will be our last night on river, don’t forget to ask your guides about the Xama story under the bright stars of the majestic Milky Way.
Today we continue to our take out point. There will be plenty of time for splashing around, drifting and experience many facets of this unique mountainous landscape. On arrival at the take out point we will be met by the take out crew, unload the rafts and make our way back to our base camp for your departure or enjoy your last evening overlooking the mighty Orange River with a relaxing evening at base camp.
